Primary Characters:
Johnathan (Jono) Frye – The Naïve New Guy
Jono has always been smart, unfortunately smarts don’t equal social skills or infinite wisdom. His lack of financial and social intelligence has left him friendless, bar a group of gold-digging hanger ons, and at the mercy of his controlling father, Mr Frye.
After hitting it off with property photographer, Emma, Jono goes against his risk avoiding nature, and decides to take control of his life. Packing his bags, he leaves the Frye family mansion and moves into a rundown share house, in the hopes of becoming an adult. Being the least experienced member of the household, he’s taken under the wing of the house slob, Sam, who does his best to keep the other housemates, especially Chris, the intrusive artist, from messing with him.
Mr Alexander Frye – The Controlling Father
Mr Alexander Frye is the type of guy that cuts you off in his Maserati, as he’s got something more important to deal with than you do. A self-made real estate mogul, Mr Frye holds himself and his son, Jono, to a high standard of discipline.
This is due to the fact that Mr Frye was a directionless, jobless, loser, until Jono was born. After bringing Jono home from the hospital, Mr Frye, with the help of his wife Melody, worked hard and turned his life around. He fears that Jono may become a loser like he once was, so he forces him to comply with a strict set of rules. This caring but overbearing nature causes Jono to move out. His stubborn nature, however, doesn’t allow him to let Jono go, so he purchases the share house he moves into, in an attempt to continue the rigid discipline of his son.
Emily (Emma) Waters – The Fiery Photographer
Emma loves the beauty of life and wants to share it with everyone. She’s the kind of girl whose active life and social media brings out your inner jealousy and makes you contemplate putting down the bag of chips you’re eating. Her photos of waterfalls and hidden pathways are to die for, but they unfortunately don’t pay the bills. She’s going through the motions as a property photographer, which isn’t helped by the overbearing nature of her boss, Mr Frye. She dreams of being able to transition into a more exciting photography career path. When she meets the boss’ son, Jono, she thinks it’d be advantageous to be nice to him, not realising that she’d grow to have feelings for him. This makes things difficult, as her distant and unstructured nature clashes with Jono’s naïve, planned out lifestyle.
The Housemates:
Samuel (Sam) Ford – A Loyal Slob
Sam had to find out what being an adult was by himself, as he was kicked out of home at the age of sixteen. This left him to turn into a stubborn slob, who pisses with the door open. He also tends to cling on to people who can see past his deficiencies, making him a loyal, but dependent, friend. This irreverent attitude, however, infuriates Darren and repels women, leaving him sex hungry and alone. His best friend in the house would have to be Chris, but their constant wagering gets on the nerves of the other housemates. When Jono moves in, Sam connects with him quickly, as he reminds him of what he was like when he first moved in.
Christopher (Chris) Wright – The Intrusive Artist
Chris has been trying to create the perfect piece of art for years, but his hypercritical attitude, always gets in the way. This attitude was sculpted by his critically acclaimed, sculptor parents, who loathe painting, especially portraits. They constantly called Chris’ work mediocre and derivative from an early age. The share house has always been a great place to find subjects for his work, but his housemates always seem to ruin it, by waking up or rolling over. He appreciates Jono, as he’s the first person to offer to be a subject willingly.
Darren Lang – The Clean Freak Gym Junkie
Yes, Darren goes to the gym, it’ll probably be the first thing he tells you about himself. As much as the other housemates annoy him and his OCD, they come in handy at parties, as they make Darren seem much more attractive in comparison. This makes it easy for him to cycle through women and feed into his inner neuroticism, cause by a horrendous high school break up. Having the most life experience and being the only responsible one, Darren is the defacto Dad of the house, organising the payment of bills and keeping everyone from killing each other.
Junko Shimizu – The Sarcastic Enigma
Looking to live in a more open and inclusive society, Junko gained a university scholarship and moved to Australia, leaving her friends and family behind in Japan. She found out, unfortunately, that the Gold Coast isn’t as hospitable as they make it out to be in the ads. During her first week there, she was mocked for her accent. Deciding to hide the fact that she can speak English, she moved up to Brisbane and into the share house. The fact that the boys find her mysterious, makes them easier to manipulate and get what she wants, but makes it hard for her to achieve what she needs deep down, that is to belong.
Fabio Russo – The kind-hearted traveller
Living in a quaint Italian town in the countryside, may be the dream for some people, but not Fabio. Tried of his father’s small-town lifestyle and ideals, Fabio sets out on a journey to visit every country in the world. Running low on funds, he decides to stay in Australia for a while, moving into the share house. His kind hearted nature allows him to make friends easily, but unfortunately, he never sticks around long enough to see the friendships strengthen. He leaves for farm work to extend his visa an additional year.
Recurring Characters:

The first of Jono’s gold-digging hanger ons, James has ridden Jono’s coattails to a rather comfortable junior salesman job at Frye Family Realty. He’s not satisfied with this position in the company, as he dreams of being a big deal real estate agent with expensive sports cars and beautiful women, who’ll actually talk to him. He, however, lacks the work ethic to make his dream a reality.
Beau Miller – The True-blue Garbage Friend
The second of Jono’s gold-digging hanger ons, Beau, has plenty of his own money from various trade jobs, but still uses Jono as his own personal source of finance. Whether it be horse racing or having a slap on the pokies, Beau believes that one day he’ll win big and finally be able to move back to Central Queensland. His dream to leave city life behind, is one he’s shared with no one and looks to keep it that way.
Kiwi Jim (James Kauri) – The Wizened New Zealander Trying To Manage His Rage
James hasn’t always been an angry man, but after a stressful move to Australia and the breakdown of his marriage, he could no longer keep his rage at bay. Kiwi Jim, a nickname given to him by Beau and his fellow labourers, now spends his time doling out wisdom to unsuspecting eighteen year olds, like Jono. He hopes to repair his broken marriage and is getting better at forgiving, but he’ll never forgive his wife’s former personal trainer, the man he believes is solely at fault for their break up.
Jenny Wilkes – The Malicious Hook-up
All Jenny wanted was a bit of love and affection, but she seems to have no luck with men. Her embarrassment by latest fling, Darren, was the straw that broke poor Jenny’s back. Now on a rampage, she’s vowed to ruin Darren’s life and the lives of the men who formerly scorned her. In her pursuit of revenge, Jenny will do anything, even hurt people who don’t deserve it, leading her to become the thing she hates the most.
Sarah Newton- The Awkward Dater
Sarah is one of the few girls that Mr Frye has allowed Jono to date. She regrets breaking it off, especially now that Jono has moved out and has his own place. Sarah is afraid that her time is running out, as more and more of her girlfriends are getting married and having kids, so she’s strictly focused on getting Jono back. If only she could really tell Jono how she feels, as her own awkwardness always seems to get in the way.
Mr Michael Raines – The Vengeful Grandfather
Mr Michael Raines is the founder of Raines Real Estate, the number one real estate agency in town and a company that he designed to be given down to his descendants. That was until his son in law, Mr Alexander Frye, broke away and started Frye Family Realty, taking Michael’s daughter, Melody, with him. Floundering in second place, without the support of his family, Michael became more and more resentful towards Alex. The only reason he hasn’t made a more concerted effort to take down Frye Family Realty, is for the love of his daughter, Melody, in who he sees all of his best qualities.
Mrs Melody Frye – The Delegatory Mother
Melody met Alex Frye during her rebellious teenage phase and made the mistake of staying with him until she fell pregnant. Now with a young family and a burnout of a husband, Melody used all her strength to whip Alex into shape, turning him into one of the most successful agents at Raines Real Estate. She didn’t stop there, as she delegated the discipline of their son to Alex, eventually making her own disciplinary skills obsolete. Now with Jono moving out, she can see more and more of the old Alex coming back, bringing with it the impending end of their marriage.
Daniel Danielson The Fifth – The Maverick Car Salesman That Doesn’t Play By The Rules, Or The Law
Daniel comes from a long line of car salesmen, as well as a long line of men called Daniel. While he’s the pride and joy of the Prazision dealership, he’s forever mocked by his father’s lofty sales record of three hundred new cars sold in one calendar year. Desperate to outdo Daniel Danielson the Fourth, Danny employs a lot of shady tactics to gain his quota, including hiring Jono off the books and attempting to get other salesmen fired.
Martin Walsh – The Carefree Landlord
Martin’s getting old, and he knows it. After a thirty year career as a project manager, he’s enjoying his retirement. Still a Byron Bay boy at heart, there’s nothing more he loves than going for a surf, then catching up with some mates for a cold beer. He’s seen many different tenants come through his investment property, or as they know it the share house, but he’ll always have a soft spot for his boys, Darren, Chris and Sam. This current crop of tenants always keep him entertained, as he no longer has to deal with the mundane landlord life.
Daniel Perkins: The Judgy Hipster
Daniel looks up to Chris, so cool and erratic, just what he longs to be. Bullied in high school for daring to dabble in the alternative, Daniel dreamed of a time when he’d be accepted. Although he’s now arguably one of the coolest people in his acting school and his persona and style have been turned up to eleven, he still wishes to be deemed cool by the modern man, the Darren’s or Fabio’s of the world. Little does he know that by just being himself, he might get closer to his goal.
Misty Davidson – The Punk Rocker With Daddy Issues
Misty is the front woman of everyone’s favourite Riot Grrrl band “Daddy Issues”. Although female centric Punk Rock has declined in the last few decades, Misty is only using the band as a place to “cut her teeth” before moving onto more mainstream genres. In short, Misty wants to be a huge star, in the hopes that her distant Father will actually acknowledge her. Their relationship was strained from an early age, as he’d often go on extended work trips, before finally divorcing her mother and leaving the country. This left her feeling abandoned and stunted her ability to express her emotions in healthy ways. She’s as destructive and rebellious as they come.
